The Doug In Me

My Dad, Doug (aka Geegaw), keeps a very clean car. Every car they have or have ever had always looks brand new inside and out because it is so spic and span. When I was in college and would come home for the weekend, I would always wake up in the morning to a missing car only to watch it return shiny and clean. I try my hardest to keep my house spic and span, but my car, I must admit, is my downfall. This cannot make my father proud! LOL My car is never (well rarely) junky or trashy and the outside gets cleaned regularly. It doesn't take much time to drive through a car wash now and again. The inside, however, could stand to be vacuumed a bit more frequently, especially now that I have a toddler! I was much, much better about it before I had a kid, but now I'm just so busy with her that the inside of my car only crosses my mind when I'm in it. And when I'm in it, I usually have somewhere I need to be and on the way back from where we went she's always sleepy, hungry or asking to potty. And who wants to take their toddler to a car wash and try to keep them entertained while you wait on your car to be cleaned? Not me! So there you go. My car is my "Monica closet." Those of you who watched Friends should understand that one.

Something else that would make my Daddy cringe would be the fact that I go too long between oil changes. Or maybe I don't. My old Honda had a light that came on when I needed an oil change, which was often months after the sticker recommended it be done. My new Honda does not have said light and I'm too lazy to look it up in the owner's manual, so I just kind of wing it. I get the oil changed when I get that "feeling." LOL I get the feeling I need to change the oil usually about a month after the sticker's recommendation. I have never once been told that I've waited too long or anything so I must have a pretty good "feeling" for these things, huh? =) Sorry Dad! Is it enough that I at least know what I'm supposed to do even if I don't do it? On second thought, please don't answer that and most definitely don't throw that back in my face when Hana's a teenager!

Anyhow, this month I needed to get my car inspected and since the sticker said I needed an oil change at the end of September, I figured I would get it all done at once. So after gymnastics this morning (where Hana was told by her teacher that she "won the prize for the day" for being such a great little tumbler), Hana and I headed to the oil change place to get the car taken care of. Once finished I decided it was time to clean the car. I headed to our local car wash where there's a guy who details your car for you if you want, or you can do it yourself. Apparently the guy wasn't there and the automatic car wash was out of order. Now what? Well, it just brought out the Doug in me!

I grabbed my quarters, loaded up the machine and washed away. Man, I don't remember the last time I washed my own car like that! Is that sad? Keep in mind that I was pregnant for nine months and then had an infant. Hana was happily eating her snack in the back seat (which I strategically planned so that I could vacuum up the crumbs when she was finished) as I scrubbed away. Then I pulled up to the vacuuming area where I vacuumed my car, vacuumed Hana and her car seat with her still in it - she thought that was HILARIOUS - and I even bought an Armor All sponge and shined up the dashboard and such. I even went so far as to take out my lint brush, which I keep in the glove compartment, and rid my black cloth seats of as much lint and fuzz as possible. What a ridiculous decision it was to purchase a car with black cloth seats! As I was finishing up by spritzing the interior with that "new car smell," an older gentleman who had just washed his car approached me and asked me if I was the one doing the detailing. Really? Me? I laughed and told him that I was merely a customer. I thought for a second, stepped back and looked at my car and realized how gosh darn good it looked! I guess once I got started the Doug in me came out! I should have charged that man $50 and gone ahead and detailed his car too! LOL

Cannn't waiat till you come down again, my car needs detailing too.
I am the same way, I wait till I just have to, I don't have a toddler but I do have a senior citizen that can be just as bad. It has gotten almost senseless to try and keep the house cleaned up after her, oh well, it could be worse I could be here alone.

Your dad loves his vehicles, and if you were in one as much as we are you would want it clean? We both spend a lot of time coming and going to work, and then our granddaughter lives in
O-k-l-a-h-o-m-a! Had to spell it! HA!

Like someone just said. For some reason I've always spent alot of time in cars and trucks.Living in Tool I've traveled far to make a living. So,I must keep the train rolling.Sometimes I go and look at new cars and trucks.STICKER SHOCK ! So I go and wash my car or truck. However I've never judged anyone with the appearance of thier vehicles. In the Marines I washed my own clothes, keep my rifle clean and dry socks. So I guess that's just me.I'll Try to do better.

Come to think of it.It was Rita who drove it into my brain to change the oil in my cars.Hmmmm ! wonder where she got that ? She did mention one time that her Dad told her to change her car oil every 3000 miles.Don't laugh but back then there were no fast lube joints. So,he did it for her.
