Lately there have been lots of tangles and tears caused by sticky foods, toothpaste and fine hair. Obviously, I'm a fan of short hair, but I'm not a fan of forcing my likes down Hana's throat. But every single night, this happens:
ME: Bath time!
HANA: (In her whiniest voice) Do we have to wash hair tonight?
ME: (We don't have to every night, BTW, but she gets so much stuff in it, it is frequent) Yes.
HANA: (Crying) I don't like washing my hair!
She also cries every time there's a tangle I need to brush out, as gently as possible, of course. And she whines every single time I remove a ponytail holder from her hair. Apparently that hurts, too. I have a tough head, so not a lot bothers me. I honestly don't get it, but I try to be as sympathetic as I can. So...
It all started yesterday morning when she was doing a lousy job of brushing her teeth. I kept having to remind her what she was doing and she somehow managed to get toothpaste in her hair, on her shoulder and down the front of her leotard. We were getting ready for gymnastics. Her hair was in pigtails, which she will now only wear for gymnastics. She will not wear them any other time. She NEVER wears a ponytail much less a bow or clip in her hair. Occasionally she might don a headband, but that's about as frilly as it gets. Never mind the fact that she has possibly thousands of hair bows, clips, etc. But I digress. I wet her hair to try to get the toothpaste out and she cried because I was wetting her hair. I tried combing it and she cried more. Then she cried because since she wouldn't let me wet her hair much, the toothpaste dried up and made her hair a little crunchy and she didn't like the way that looked. Basically there was a lot of crying going on and we were late for gymnastics.
But here was a new girl in her gymnastics class yesterday. I noticed she had a really cute bob. That afternoon Hana told me about her new friend she met at gymnastics and, "her hair is beautiful!" She also mentioned her voice is beautiful. I'm thinking she might have an accent. No idea there, I didn't hear her speak. So then yesterday evening when it was bath time our usual conversation took place. I reminded her of the toothpaste still lingering in her hair, so it needed to be washed. Then she cried as I removed both ponytail holders from her pigtails. Then a light bulb went off over my head and I asked, "Hana would you like to get your hair cut like your new friend's?" She excitedly said yes! I guess all those times she said no to a cut was probably because she couldn't picture in her mind what I meant. Now that she had a friend with a short cut, she was able to relate. So we made an appointment for today at her most favorite place, Sweet N Sassy.
(She got a sucker for being so good. That's it's remains sticking out the side of her mouth!)
I can't tell if she likes it, can you? LOL! Actually, she said, "I love it! Can it stay like this forever?" I love it too! I also love her new Dallas Mavericks dress.
Miss Hana gets to go to her very first Mavs game tomorrow night and she couldn't be more excited to "get to see Dirk shoot basketball" as she says.
